This year, 1708 Gallery’s own Kerry Mills organized a citywide constellation of lantern-making workshops inspired by Jump!Star’s themes and the Future North Star characters. 

From the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to the Institute for Contemporary Art to Candela and 1708 itself, Kerry’s workshops invited participants to design lanterns to bring to InLight. The results were beautiful— expressive, painterly, and glowing with personality.

Her dedication and grace in shepherding so many moving parts was luminous. The hundreds of lanterns that filled the workshops were a testament to the creative ambition of the lantern-makers and to Kerry’s quiet brilliance in making space for others to shine.
